Indications
- Treatment of scabies

Pharmacology
- Contains Permethrin
- Topical scabicidal agent
- Acts on nerve cell membrane
- Disrupts sodium channel current
- Causes delayed repolarization & paralysis of pests
- Limited systemic exposure
- Rapid metabolism by ester hydrolysis
- Excretion in urine
Dosage
- Full tube for adults and children over 12 years
- Up to 1/2 of a tube for children aged 6-12 years
- Up to 1/4 of a tube for children aged 1-5 years
- Up to 1/8 of a tube for children aged 2 months to 1 year
- Dose not established for children less than 2 months
Administration
- Clean, cool and dry skin before application
- Avoid hot shower or bath before applying
- Apply to whole body for adults and children over 2 years
- Include all skin surfaces
- Apply to face, neck, ears, and scalp for babies under 2 years
- Leave on for at least 8 hours before washing off
- Reapply to any washed area during treatment
- Reapply after 7 days if necessary
Interaction
- Withhold treatment of eczematous-like reactions with corticosteroids prior to Scabex use
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to pyrethroids or permethrin
- Use gloves for nursing staff applying permethrin
Side Effects
- Skin discomfort such as burning, stinging, or tingling
- Transient signs of irritation
- Erythema, edema, eczema, rash, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use in pregnancy only with medical advice
- Avoid use in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- May temporarily exacerbate pruritus, edema, erythema
- Avoid contact with eyes during application
- Flush with water if cream gets in the eyes
