Zunex 5% w/w (Cream)

Indications

• Treatment of scabies
• Treatment of crab lice infestations
• Treatment for all family members

Pharmacology

• Contains Permethrin, a pyrethroid
• Acts on the nerve cell membrane
• Disrupts sodium channel current
• Causes delayed repolarization & paralysis of pests
• Pharmacokinetics include topical route of administration
• Less than 0.5% absorption of applied Permethrin

Dosage

• Recommended duration of treatment for different age groups

Administration

• Application on clean, cool and dry skin
• Application to whole body from neck down
• Application for babies under 2 years
• Leave cream on for at least 8 hours before washing off
• Reapplication after 7 days if necessary

Interaction

• Risk of exacerbating scabies infestation with corticosteroids for eczemodous like reactions

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to pyrethroids or permethrin
• Use of gloves for nursing staff applying permethrin

Side Effects

• Skin discomfort, burning, stinging or tingling
• Transient signs and symptoms of irritation including erythema, edema, eczema, rash and pruritus

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Use in pregnancy should follow medical advice
• Avoid use in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid contact with eyes during application
• Flash with water immediately if cream gets in the eyes
