Indications
- Treatment of scabies
- Treatment of pruritus
Pharmacology
- Permethrin as pyrethroid pediculocide and scabicide
- Crotamiton as scabicidal and antipruritic
Dosage
- Suitable for adults, children of 2 months of age and above, and the elderly
- External use only
- Single application over the whole body
- Left on for at least 8 hours
- Whole body washed thoroughly 8-12 hours after application
Administration
- Applied to clean, dry skin
- Not applied to broken skin, mucous membranes, or near the eyes
- Body should be allowed to cool if hot
- Washing of cloths and bed sheets after treatment
- Preventive use for family members
- Not applied to the vicinity of mouth and areas close to eyes
Interaction
- Withholding of corticosteroids prior to treatment with permethrin for eczematous-like reactions
- Small likelihood of interactions leading to potentiated adverse reactions or reduced efficacy
Contraindications
- Contra-indicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to permethrin or crotamiton
- External use only
- Avoid contact with the eyes
- Keep out of the reach of children
Side Effects
- Occasional reports of burning or stinging sensation
- Transient signs and symptoms of skin irritation including rash or itching, erythema, edema, and eczema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first three months
- Avoid applying in the area of the nipples for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- External use only
- Nursing staff may wish to wear gloves
- Avoid contact with the eyes
- Keep out of the reach of children
Overdose Effects
- No reports of overdosage
- Excessive application may result in local adverse reactions
- Consider gastric lavage if accidentally ingested by a child within 2 hours of ingestion
