Description
- Indications:
- Reduction of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in familial hypercholesterolaemia
- Treatment of mixed dyslipidemia and hypertriglyceridemia
- Reduction of cardiac ischemic events in coronary artery disease
- Lipid management for patients with diabetes mellitus or renal transplantation
- Pharmacology:
- Selective inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase
- Lowering of plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels
- Increased hepatic LDL receptors for enhanced uptake and catabolism of LDL
- Dosage & Administration:
- Initial dose for adults: 10 mg once daily
- Dose adjustment based on response
- Administration with or without food
- Pediatric dosing based on age and condition
- Interaction:
- Increased risk of myopathy with concurrent use of certain drugs
- Altered plasma concentrations and LDL-C reduction with antacids, colestipol, digoxin, erythromycin, oral contraceptives, and warfarin
- Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Active liver disease or unexplained elevations of serum transaminases
- History of serious adverse reaction to HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
