Indications
- Adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B
- Reduce elevated triglycerides levels in patients with hyperlipidemia
Pharmacology
- Selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase
- Lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels
- Increases hepatic LDL receptors for enhanced uptake and catabolism of LDL
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: Usually 10 mg once daily, may be increased to max. 80 mg once daily
- Children (10-18 years): Initially 10 mg once daily, increased to max. 20 mg once daily
Interaction
- Increased risk of myopathy with concurrent administration of cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin, erythromycin, azole antifungals
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Active liver disease
- History of serious adverse reaction to prior administration of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
