Description
- Zuvas is indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and triglycerides levels. Atorvastatin is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase.
DosageAndAdministration
- Usually 10 mg once daily for adults; may be increased to max. 80 mg once daily. Child (10-18 years): Initially 10 mg once daily, increased if necessary to max. 20 mg once daily.
Pharmacology
- Atorvastatin lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
StorageConditions
- Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
Indications
- Reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.
ModeOfAction
- Atorvastatin is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase and increases the number of hepatic LDL receptors for enhanced uptake and catabolism of LDL.
Interaction
- Increased risk of myopathy with concurrent administration of cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin, erythromycin, azole antifungals.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component, active liver disease, unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
SideEffects
- Constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, infection, headache, back pain, rash, asthenia, arthralgia, myalgia.
PregnancyAndLactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to potential adverse effects on the fetus and infant.

- Liver function tests should be performed before initiation of treatment and periodically thereafter.

- Plasma concentrations of Zuvas are higher in elderly subjects than in young adults.
OverdoseEffects
- Specific treatment is not available for atorvastatin overdose. Symptomatic and supportive measures should be instituted.
