Pharmacology

  • Clobetasol Propionate: Highly active corticosteroid with topical anti-inflammatory activity
  • Neomycin Sulphate: Aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections
  • Nystatin: Antifungal that kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes

Dosage and administration

  • Apply sparingly once or twice daily to the affected area
  • Adult dose can be enhanced by occluding the treatment area with polythene
  • Not recommended for use in neonates and infants under 2 years

Interaction

  • Neomycin Sulphate can intensify and prolong the respiratory depressant effects of neuromuscular blocking agents

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, primary cutaneous viral infection, and hypersensitivity to the preparation

Side effects

  • Prolonged use can result in systemic absorption and hypercortisolism
  • Local atrophic changes in the skin
  • Reports of pigmentation changes and hypertrichosis

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Neomycin in pregnancy and lactation may pose a theoretical risk of foetal toxicity
  • Safety of Clobetasol Propionate not established in lactating mothers

Precautions and warnings

  • Long-term continuous topical therapy should be avoided, especially in infants and children
  • Avoid application to the eyelids to prevent glaucoma

Overdose effects

  • Acute overdosage is very unlikely to occur
  • Topical steroids should be discontinued gradually in case of chronic overdosage or misuse
