Indications
- Relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid responsive eczema/dermatitis
Pharmacology
- Fluticasone propionate is a glucocorticoid with high topical anti-inflammatory potency and low HPA-axis suppressive activity after dermal administration
Dosage & Administration
- Cream: Apply a thin layer to affected skin once daily
- Ointment: Apply a thin layer to affected skin twice daily

Contraindications
- Rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral dermatitis
- Primary cutaneous viral infections (e.g., Herpes simplex, chicken pox)
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Perianal and genital pruritus
- Not indicated in treatment of primarily infected skin lesions caused by fungi or bacteria
Side Effects
- Local burning and pruritus
- Hypersensitivity signs warrant immediate cessation of application
- Local atrophic changes in the skin with prolonged and intensive treatment
- Secondary infection and allergic contact dermatitis reported
- Exacerbation of signs and symptoms of dermatoses reported with corticosteroid use
- Systemic absorption may produce features of hypercorticism, more likely in infants and children
- Potential for napkin to act as an occlusive dressing in infants
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Consideration of benefits vs. risks during pregnancy
- Uninvestigated excretion into human breast milk
- Systemic absorption likely to be low in breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Low systemic absorption but potential for adrenal suppression with prolonged high dose application, especially in infants and small children
- Proportionally larger absorption in children
- Atrophic changes may occur on the face with prolonged treatment
- Appropriate antimicrobial therapy for infected inflammatory lesions
- Withdrawal of corticosteroid therapy and systemic antimicrobial agents for spread of infection
- Bacterial infection encouraged by warm, moist conditions induced by occlusive dressing
Overdose Effects
- Acute overdosage very unlikely
- Chronic overdosage or misuse may lead to appearance of hypercorticism, requiring discontinuation
- Extremely unlikely oral bioavailability
