Antibacterial Effect
Exhibits antibacterial effect on gram-positive cocci and bacilli
Drug Absorption
Econazole Nitrate is slightly absorbed from the skin, whereas Triamcinolone Acetonide is well absorbed from sites of local application
Dosage
Apply sparingly to the skin lesion no more than 2 times daily, duration of treatment should not exceed 2 weeks
Pediatric Use Caution
Pediatric patients may demonstrate greater susceptibility to topical corticosteroid-induced side effects
Drug Interaction
- Econazole: Metabolized by CYP3A4/2C9, interacts with oral anticoagulants (warfarin & acenocoumarol)
- Triamcinolone: Interacts with salicylates, NSAIDs, antidiabetics, amphotericin B, beta-blockers, potassium-depleting diuretics, theophylline, ciclosporin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, barbiturate, rifampicin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
- Specific skin conditions such as tuberculous, varicella, herpes simplex or other viral infections of the skin, or fresh vaccination sites
- Decubitus ulcers, Rosacea and rosacea-like dermatitis
Side Effects
- Transient local mild irritation
- Adrenal suppression on long term continuous topical steroid therapy
Pregnancy
Topical administration of corticosteroids during pregnancy can cause abnormalities of fetal development, should not be used in large amounts or for prolonged periods
Lactation
Should not be used by lactating mothers, or if prescribed, lactation should be withheld during treatment
Precautions
- For external use only
- Hypersensitivity reaction should lead to discontinuation of medication
- Caution required in children to avoid systemic effects
- Associated with skin thinning, atrophy, and increased risk of superinfection or opportunistic infection
Overdose Effects
Corticosteroids applied to the skin can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects, treat symptomatically in case of accidental ingestion
