Description
- A combination antibiotic and steroid cream used to treat skin infections, itching, and swelling
Composition
- Triamcinolone 1 mg
- Neomycin 2.5 mg
- Nystatin 10000 unit
- Gramicidin 0.25 mg
Pharmacology
- Fluorinated corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and anti-allergic actions
- Polyene antifungal antibiotic that binds to ergosterol and interferes with the permeability of cell membranes
- Topical aminoglycoside effective against susceptible staphylococci and other organisms
- Antibacterial substance active against many Gram-positive bacteria
Dosage and administration
- For topical use only
- Apply a small amount in a thin layer and rub in gently, 2 to 3 times daily
- Avoid eye and mouth contact, and do not use inside the nose unless directed by a doctor
- Do not bandage or cover the treated area excessively
- Use regularly at the same times each day
Interaction
- May interact with other skin products, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and corticosteroids taken orally
Contraindications
- Avoid on tuberculous, viral, or fungal lesions not susceptible to nystatin
- Not for use on facial rosacea, acne vulgaris, or perioral dermatitis
- Do not apply to external auditory canal with perforated tympanic membranes
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
Side effects
- Prolonged use may cause sensitivity reactions, impaired wound healing, thinning of skin, striae, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome
Pregnancy and lactation
- Not classified by FDA into a specified pregnancy category
Precautions and warnings
- Avoid occlusive dressing and prolonged or recurrent use
- Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes
- Limit use to 5 days on the face or on children under 1 year
- Use with caution on inflamed or damaged skin, and in pregnancy
