Indications
- Treatment of androgenic alopecia in males and females
- Stabilisation of hair loss in patients with androgenic alopecia
- Treatment of alopecia areata
Pharmacology
Minoxidil stimulates hair growth by increasing oxygen, blood and nutrients supply to the hair follicle by widening blood vessels and inhibiting androgen hormone to affect hair follicles.
Mode of Action
- Increases oxygen, blood, and nutrients supply to hair follicles
- Widens blood vessels
- Inhibits androgen hormone
Dosage & Administration
- For external use only
- Applied when hair and scalp are clean and dry
- Applied twice daily at 12-hour intervals
- Should not exceed 2 ml total daily application dose
- For best results, should remain on scalp for about 4 hours before washing
- Should not be massaged into the scalp
- Should be allowed to dry out before using a hair dryer
- Should not be mixed with any hair oil
- Should not be used more than two times a day
- Washing hands immediately after application
Interaction
Should not be used with other topical agents known to alter the stratum corneum barrier such as tretinoin or dithranol
Contraindications
- Patients with cardiac abnormalities
- Children below 18 years of age
- Patients using occlusive dressings or other medicines on the scalp
- Patients with red, inflamed infection, or irritated or painful scalp (including psoriasis & sunburn)
Side Effects
Commonly encountered side effects were minor dermatologic reactions, dermatitis, and hypertrichosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Should not be used during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
More likely to cause scalp irritation. Should be stopped if the irritation continues or worsens.
Overdose Effects
- Increased systemic absorption may occur if higher-than-recommended doses are applied
- No known cases of overdosage resulting from topical administration
- Signs and symptoms would primarily be cardiovascular effects and tachycardia, managed with appropriate therapy
