Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions treatment
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers treatment
- Pyodermas treatment
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Antiseptic for wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity
- Broad spectrum of activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment:
- Apply once or twice daily for up to 14 days for infection treatment
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed
Interaction
- Interaction with strong alkali
- Interaction with sodium thiosulphate
- Interaction with sodium metabisulphite
- Interaction with thiomersal
- Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Not for use in serious cavities and in children under 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Skin and mucous membranes irritation
- Systemic adverse effects with severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (consult physician)
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult physician for deep wounds, serious burns, or persistent irritation
- Avoid pooling of solution beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Special caution for broken skin applications in patients with renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
