Description
- Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity
- Broad spectrum of activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Non-staining, exerts prolonged germicidal action
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
- Forms rich, golden lather for antiseptic skin cleansing
- Forms a protective antiseptic layer over the affected area
- Used for the symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions
Pharmacology
- Microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Lower toxicity than elemental iodine
- Liberates elemental iodine slowly
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
- Apply full strength as often as needed
- Gargle or rinse up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily into the conjunctival sac
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may lead to hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Can cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of skin and mucous membranes
- May produce systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential fetal thyroid effects
- Considered compatible with breastfeeding by American Academy of Pediatrics
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Administration during pregnancy and lactation not recommended except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult a Registered Physician for deep wounds, puncture wounds, or serious burns
- Avoid pooling beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause irritation or severe skin reactions
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery until vision has cleared
