Indications

  • Primary or secondary topical infections
  • Infected surgical incisions
  • Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
  • Pyodermas
  • Secondarily infected dermatoses
  • Infected traumatic lesions
  • Prevent microbial contaminations in burns
  • Degerming skin in hyperalimentation
  • Abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds prevention
  • Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
  • Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
  • Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipments
  • Preoperative prepping of operative site
  • Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
  • Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
  • Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
  • As a preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
  • Treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
  • Substitute for tear fluid in case of unstable tear film or insufficient moistening of the eye surface

Pharmacology

  • Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
  • Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
  • Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine by liberating elemental iodine slowly
  • Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi/yeasts
  • Sporicidal
  • Non-staining
  • Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

  • Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days for the treatment of infection
  • Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for the prevention of infection
  • Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak for the solution
  • Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water for the gargle & mouthwash
  • Wet hands and forearms with water for the surgical scrub
  • Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
  • 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for the ophthalmic solution

Interaction

  • Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
  • Concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect

Contraindications

  • May cause hypersensitivity reactions
  • Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy is to be avoided
  • Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
  • Not to be used in serious cavities and in Children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
  • Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function for severe burns or large denuded areas
  • Interference with thyroid function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the possibility of affecting fetal thyroid
  • Use usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • No experience regarding the safety of the Povidone eye drops in human pregnancy or lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • In case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult Registered Physician
  • Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
  • Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause irritation or rarely, severe skin reactions
  • Regular use of gargle & mouthwash should be avoided
  • Special caution is needed when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
  • Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
  • Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery after instillation of the ophthalmic solution

  • Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface as this may contaminate Betadine
  • Do not use it after one month of the first opening
