Indications
- Therapeutically applied for primary or secondary topical infections
- Used for infected surgical incisions
- For treating infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Effective in managing pyodermas
- Applicable for secondarily infected dermatoses
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns, incisions, and other topical lesions
- Degerm skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area, or circumcision

Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Offers prolonged germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against various microorganisms
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days for infection treatment
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for infection prevention
- Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak for solution
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing, repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
- Wet hands and forearms with water, apply Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub and scrub thoroughly for about five minutes for surgical scrub
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Not to be used in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Application to severe burns or large denuded areas may produce systemic adverse effects
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the possibility of iodine absorption affecting the fetal thyroid
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding as per the American Academy of Pediatrics
- Not advised for use in pregnant and lactating women
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, and known iodine sensitivity
- Avoid 'pooling' of solution beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause irritation or severe skin reactions
- Regular use should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Care must be taken when applying on broken skin of patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
