Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns
- Prevent microbial contaminations in incisions and other topical lesions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area or circumcision
- Prevent infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment of surface infections
- Treatment of seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipments
- Preoperative prepping of operative site
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations and abrasions
- Postoperative application to incisions
- Oral moniliasis (thrush)
- Bacterial and mycotic skin infections
- Degerm the skin, mucous membrane, and hyperalimentation procedures
- Gargle & Mouthwash for acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Gargle & Mouthwash for oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Prolonged germicidal action
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Repeat up to four times daily
- Wet hands and forearms with water for surgical scrub
- Pour about 5 mL of Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub on the palm of the hand and spread over both hands and forearms
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- 1 drop 4 times daily for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali
- Exhibits interaction with sodium thiosulphate
- Exhibits interaction with sodium metabisulphite
- Exhibits interaction with thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may lead to hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Regular use in patients receiving lithium therapy
- Avoid in severely burnt patients
- Avoid in serious cavities
- Avoid in Children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects with application to severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy
- Generally compatible with breastfeeding
- Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women
- No experience regarding the safety in human pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged use in preoperative prepping
- Avoid regular use for more than 14 days for Gargle & Mouthwash
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Special caution needed when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Use directly from the container for Powder
- Patients should not drive or use machinery if experiencing blurred vision after application of the eye drops
