Indications

  • Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
  • Treatment of infected surgical incisions
  • Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
  • Prophylactically for degerming skin in hyperalimentation, umbilical area or circumcision
  • Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca

Pharmacology

  • Complex of iodine and an organic polymer (Povidone)
  • Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
  • Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi
  • Sporicidal
  • Non-staining and active in the presence of various substances

Dosage and Administration

  • Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily for up to 14 days
  • Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed
  • Gargle & Mouthwash: Use up to 10 mL up to four times daily for up to 14 days
  • Surgical Scrub: Wet hands and forearms, apply and rub for five minutes
  • Powder: Apply a light dusting to the affected area
  • Ophthalmic Solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required

Interaction

Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
  • Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
  • May produce systemic adverse effects in severe burn cases

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy
  • Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women unless for compelling reasons

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid prolonged use in deep wounds or serious burns
  • Special caution needed for patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
  • Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
  • Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery after applying the eye drops
