Indications

  • Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
  • Infected surgical incisions
  • Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers

  • Preventative usage for infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds

  • Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing
  • Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
  • Prophylactic anti-infective agent for various procedures
  • Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush)
  • Preoperative swab in the mouth and throat
  • Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
  • Oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgery
  • Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing
  • Topical application for superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, and lacerations
  • Treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
  • Substitute for tear fluid
  • Symptomatic treatment of the unstable tear film or insufficient moistening of the eye surface

Pharmacology

  • Complex of iodine and an organic polymer (povidone)
  • Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
  • Rapid microbicidal activity against various microorganisms
  • Non-staining
  • Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

  • Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days for treatment of infection
  • Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for prevention of infection
  • Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak; may be bandaged (where necessary)
  • Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water; gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing; repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
  • Surgical Scrub: Follow specific procedures for preoperative and postoperative washing; for use on patients and in the physician's office; apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area; ophthalmic solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required

  • Interaction with strong alkali
  • Interaction with sodium thiosulphate
  • Interaction with sodium metabisulphite

  • Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
  • Regular use in patients receiving lithium therapy
  • Assessment of serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
  • Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
  • Systemic adverse effects for severe burns or large denuded areas of skin
  • Interference with thyroid function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy
  • Possibility of absorbing sufficient iodine to affect the fetal thyroid
  • Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation except for compelling reasons

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
  • Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
  • Special caution for regular applications to broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
  • Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
  • Avoid prolonged use of Gargle & Mouthwash as it may lead to significant iodine absorption
  • Regular use should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
  • Contact lenses should not be worn during the instillation of the ophthalmic solution
