Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections

Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer (povidone)
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against various microorganisms
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days for treatment of infection
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for prevention of infection
- Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak; may be bandaged (where necessary)
- Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water; gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing; repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
- Surgical Scrub: Follow specific procedures for preoperative and postoperative washing; for use on patients and in the physician's office; apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area; ophthalmic solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required

- Interaction with strong alkali
- Interaction with sodium thiosulphate
- Interaction with sodium metabisulphite

- Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Regular use in patients receiving lithium therapy
- Assessment of serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects for severe burns or large denuded areas of skin
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Possibility of absorbing sufficient iodine to affect the fetal thyroid
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Special caution for regular applications to broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Avoid prolonged use of Gargle & Mouthwash as it may lead to significant iodine absorption
- Regular use should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Contact lenses should not be worn during the instillation of the ophthalmic solution
