Composition

Technical Specifications

  • Broad spectrum microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
  • Sporicidal activity
  • Non-staining and active in the presence of blood, serum, pus, and water

Dosage and Administration

  • Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days (cream/ointment)
  • Apply full strength as needed (solution)
  • Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing (gargle & mouthwash)
  • Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area, or as advised by the registered physician (powder)
  • Instill 1 drop 4 times daily into the conjunctival sac (ophthalmic solution)

Pharmacological Action

  • Forms complex of iodine and povidone
  • Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
  • Rapid microbicidal activity against various microorganisms
  • Exhibits sporicidal activity

Interaction

  • Can interact with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, and sodium metabisulphite
  • May exhibit hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
  • Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Skin and mucous membrane irritation
  • Potential systemic adverse effects with application to severe burns or large denuded areas

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential fetal thyroid effects

  • Special caution with deep wounds, puncture wounds, and serious burns
  • Avoid prolonged use in certain conditions and age groups
  • Take precautions when using on known iodine sensitivity
