Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Treatment of decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Treatment of pyodermas
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation
- Abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds prevention
- Treatment of seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent
- Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush)
- Preoperative swab in the mouth and throat
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for treatment
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention
- Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL
- Use for preoperative and postoperative washing
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali
- Should be used with caution with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Avoid use in severely burnt patients
- Not recommended for use in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects

- Systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding
- Not recommended in pregnant and lactating women

Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds
- Avoid prolonged exposure to wet solution
- Do not use for more than 14 days in the mouth
- Careful application on known iodine sensitivity
- Take caution when applying on broken skin
- Blurred vision warning for Ophthalmic Solution
