Indications
- Therapeutic adjunct in topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Treatment of decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Treatment of pyodermas
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- Prevention of infections in abrasions and minor cuts
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Rapid microbicidal activity
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Twice daily application for up to 14 days
- Full strength application as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
Interaction
- Interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Potential hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects for severe burns or large areas denuded of skin
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (consult physician)
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use in human pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult physician for deep wounds, puncture wounds, or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged pooling of the solution beneath the patient
- Avoid regular use as prolonged use may lead to iodine absorption
- Special caution for patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Careful usage on known iodine sensitivity
- Contact lenses should not be worn during instillation of the ophthalmic solution
