Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions

- Preventing infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment for seborrhea

- Preoperative prepping of operative site including the vagina
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Oral moniliasis (thrush); bacterial and mycotic skin infections, decubitus & stasis ulcers
- Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak. Maybe bandaged
- Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water. Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing. Repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
- Surgical Scrub: Use for preoperative and postoperative washing by operating personnel, preoperative use on patients, and in the physician's office
- Powder: Apply a light dusting or as advised by the Registered Physician
- Ophthalmic Solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required, depending upon the severity of the disease
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- May produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the possibility of affecting the fetal thyroid
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding, consult a Registered Physician
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation for eye drops
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution in case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged use in preoperative prepping to prevent 'pooling' beneath the patient
- Regular use should be avoided as it may lead to the absorption of a significant amount of iodine
- Special caution when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Avoid wearing contact lenses during the instillation of the ophthalmic solution
- Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery until their vision has cleared
