Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for primary or secondary topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Management of infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Control of pyodermas
- Management of secondarily infected dermatoses
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, umbilical area, or circumcision
- Prevention of infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment of surface infections and seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipments
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Management of oral moniliasis, bacterial and mycotic skin infections, decubitus & stasis ulcers
- Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer (povidone iodine)
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine by liberating elemental iodine slowly
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply cream/ointment once or twice daily for up to 14 days for treatment of infection
- Apply cream/ointment once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Apply solution as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Use gargle & mouthwash undiluted or diluted with warm water, up to 4 times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
- Apply surgical scrub as per specific instructions for preoperative and postoperative washing
- Apply powder as a light dusting to the affected area
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may exhibit a hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- May produce systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women for gargle & mouthwash and surgical scrub
- No experience regarding safety in human pregnancy or lactation for povidone eye drops
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution in case of deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or broken skin
- Avoid prolonged exposure in preoperative prepping
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Avoid regular use in children under 6 years of age
- Caution when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Careful application for patients with blurred vision after instillation of eye drops

- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
