Indications
- Treatment of primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers

- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- For degerming skin in hyperalimentation
- Prevent infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment of surface infections
- For seborrhea treatment
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipment
- Preoperative prepping of operative site
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Oral moniliasis (thrush) treatment
- Bacterial and mycotic skin infections
- Preoperative swab in the mouth and throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and povidone polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi
- Sporicidal activity
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Apply full strength as often as needed
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Apply Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub on wet hands and forearms
Interaction
- Interacts with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Potential hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects with application to severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential fetal thyroid effects
- Considered compatible with breastfeeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for compelling reasons during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or infection
- Avoid 'pooling' of solution beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Avoid prolonged use and use in children under 6 years of age for Gargle & Mouthwash
- Special caution in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Care must be taken in known iodine sensitivity with Powder
- Patients should not drive or use machinery if experiencing blurred vision with Ophthalmic Solution
