Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for primary or secondary topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Management of infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- For use on pyodermas and secondarily infected dermatoses
- Preventing microbial contaminations in burns, incisions, and other topical lesions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area or circumcision
- Prevention and treatment of surface infections and mucous membrane degerming
- Management of seborrhea
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- As a prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Mode of Action
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine by liberating elemental iodine slowly
- Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage and Administration
- Cream or ointment application for treatment and prevention of infection
- Solution applied full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle & Mouthwash use for acute mucosal infections and oral hygiene
- Surgical Scrub for preoperative and postoperative washing by operating personnel
- Powder application for superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, and lacerations
- Ophthalmic Solution instilled into the conjunctival sac 4 times daily or as required
Interaction
- Interacts with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Exhibits hypothyroidic effect in concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Can cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Not recommended for use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Not to be used in severely burnt patients without assessing serum iodide levels
- Povidone Iodine Powder should not be used in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- May produce systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per the American Academy of Pediatrics)
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution needed in case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid pooling of the solution beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Regular use of Gargle & Mouthwash should be avoided in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery after applying the eye drops
