Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area or circumcision
- Preventing infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgery
- Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing
- Treatment of surface infections and seborrhea
- Preoperative prepping of operative site, including the vagina
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Gargle and mouthwash for the treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
- Gargle and rinse with undiluted or diluted solution
- Surgical scrub for preoperative and postoperative washing by surgeons
- Topical application for superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, and abrasions
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and povidone polymer
- Lower toxicity than elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity
- Activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily into the conjunctival sac
Interaction
Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal. Concurrent lithium therapy exhibits hypothyroidic effect.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Skin and mucous membrane irritation
- Systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded skin areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to iodine absorption affecting fetal thyroid
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult physician for deep wounds, puncture wounds, or serious burns
- Avoid pooling of solution beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Special caution for broken skin applications in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy

Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C, do not freeze, and protect from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface.
