Indications
- Therapeutically used as an adjunct to systemic therapy
- Treatment of primary or secondary topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Treatment of infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Treatment of pyodermas
- Treatment of secondarily infected dermatoses
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, umbilical area, or circumcision
- Prevention of infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment of seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipment
- Preoperative prepping of operative site, including the vagina
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush), bacterial and mycotic skin infections, decubitus & stasis ulcers
- Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
Pharmacology
- A complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
- Prolongs the germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for prevention
- Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water, gargle or rinse up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Surgical Scrub: Preoperative and postoperative washing by operating personnel and patients
- Powder: Apply a light dusting to affected area
- Ophthalmic Solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may exhibit hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Can cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities
- Avoid use in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- May produce systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded skin areas
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Possibility of absorption of sufficient iodine to affect the fetal thyroid
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (consult a physician)
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use in human pregnancy or lactation except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- In case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult a physician
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause irritation or severe skin reactions
- Regular use of Gargle & Mouthwash should be limited to 14 days
- Caution when applying to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity

Storage Conditions
- Store below 25°C and do not freeze
- Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light
- Keep out of the reach of children
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
