Description

Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns, incisions and other topical lesions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area or circumcision
- Preventing infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
- Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing
- Treatment of surface infections and seborrhea
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Broad spectrum of activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment for treatment or prevention of infection
- Solution for full strength application as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle & Mouthwash for adults and children over 6 years of age
- Surgical Scrub for preoperative and postoperative washing by Operating Personnel
- Powder for topical application
Interaction
- Interacts with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- In severely burnt patients serum iodide levels should be assessed
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Possible systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the possibility of affecting the fetal thyroid
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding according to the American Academy of Pediatrics
- Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women
- No safety experience during human pregnancy or lactation for the eye drops
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, redness, irritation, swelling, or pain
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Special caution when making regular applications to broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision after application should avoid driving or using machinery

- Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
- Keep out of the reach of children
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
