Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Treatment of decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Treatment of pyodermas
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation
- Preventing infections in minor cuts and wounds
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions
- Substitute for tear fluid
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgeries
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and the organic polymer, povidone
- Superior to elemental iodine
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
- Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Use undiluted or diluted with warm water for gargle or rinse
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali
- Exhibits interaction with sodium thiosulphate
- Exhibits interaction with sodium metabisulphite
- Exhibits interaction with thiomersal
- Shows hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Avoid in severely burnt patients
- Not recommended for children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Considered compatible with breastfeeding by American Academy of Pediatrics
- Not recommended for pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for human pregnancy or lactation, except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult in case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Caution in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Care must be taken in known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery

Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface. Do not use it after one month of the first opening.
