Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for primary or secondary topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Management of infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns and incisions
- Management of pyodermas and secondarily infected dermatoses
- Treatment of infected traumatic lesions
- Prevention and treatment of surface infections
- Management of seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipment
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush), bacterial and mycotic skin infections, decubitus & stasis ulcers
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
- Substitute for tear fluid in case of unstable tear film or insufficient moistening of the eye surface
Pharmacology
- Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and povidone polymer
- Provides rapid microbicidal activity against various pathogens
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Apply full strength as often as needed
- Use as mouthwash or gargle up to four times daily
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Avoid use in severely burnt patients and children under 2 years
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions and skin/mucous membrane irritation
- Application to severe burns or large denuded areas may produce systemic adverse effects
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential fetal thyroid effects
- Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women unless compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, and broken skin
- Avoid prolonged use in mouth ulcers, sores, and in children under 6 years
- Precaution needed for patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
