Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
- Routine administration of iron
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
- Replaces iron in haemoglobin, myoglobin and enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapeutic dose for adults: 3-4.5 teaspoonful daily
- Maintenance dose for adults: 1.5 teaspoonful daily
- Dosage for children based on age groups
- Mix with water or fruit juice to avoid staining of teeth
- Do not mix with milk
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with Tetracycline
- Schedule administration with Tetracycline to avoid interaction
- Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Haemachromatosis
- Haemosiderosis
- Receiving repeated blood transfusion
- Anaemia not caused by iron deficiency
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
- Reduced side effects by taking with or immediately after food
- May cause constipation
- Liquid medication may cause temporary staining of teeth
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with caution in patients with iron storage/absorption disease
- Caution in patients with haemoglobinopathies
- Caution in patients with existing gastrointestinal disease
