Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anemia
- Prevention of iron deficiency anemia
- Treatment of anemia of pregnancy
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport via hemoglobin
- Used as iron source to replace iron found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Adult initial therapeutic dose: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily in divided doses or as prescribed by the physician
- Adult maintenance dose: 1½ teaspoonful daily, maximum 1.8g daily
- Children under 1 year: ¼ th teaspoonful thrice daily or as directed by physician
- Children 1-5 years: 1 teaspoonful thrice daily
- Children 6-12 years: 1½ teaspoonful twice daily
- Mix with water or fruit juice to avoid temporary staining of teeth
- Do not mix with milk
Interaction
- Diminished absorption with concomitant use of Tetracycline
- Iron salt should be given 3 hours before or 2 hours after Tetracycline
- Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in haemachromatosis and haemosiderosis
- Not for patients receiving repeated blood transfusion or with non-iron deficiency anemia
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Better absorbed between meals, reduced side effects by taking with or immediately after food
- Continuous administration may cause constipation
- Liquid medication may cause temporary staining of teeth
- Less likely when diluted
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution in patients with iron storage or absorption disease, haemoglobinopathies, or existing gastrointestinal disease
