Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
- Used as iron source to replace iron in haemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapeutic dose for adults: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily in divided doses or as prescribed by physician
- Maintenance dose for adults: 1½ teaspoonful daily, up to 1.8g daily if needed
- Dosage for children based on age
- Mix with water or fruit juice to avoid temporary staining of teeth
- Do not mix with milk
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with Tetracycline
- Iron salt should be given 3 hours before or 2 hours after Tetracycline
- Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in haemachromatosis and haemosiderosis
- Should not be given to patients receiving repeated blood transfusion or with anaemia not produced by iron deficiency
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
- Better absorbed between meals, can be taken with or immediately after food to reduce side effects
- Continuous administration may cause constipation
- Iron-containing liquid medication may cause temporary staining of teeth
- Less likely if diluted
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution in patients with iron storage or absorption disease, haemoglobinopathies, or existing gastrointestinal disease
