Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
Description
- Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
- Replaces iron found in haemoglobin, myoglobin, and other enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapeutic dose: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily in divided doses
- Maintenance dose: 1½ teaspoonful daily for adults
- Up to 1.8g (9 teaspoonful) daily for adults if needed
- Under 1 year: ¼th teaspoonful thrice daily for children
- 1-5 years: 1 teaspoonful thrice daily for children
- 6-12 years: 1½ teaspoonful twice daily for children
- Mix with water or fruit juice to avoid temporary staining of teeth
- Do not mix with milk
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with Tetracycline
- Give iron salt 3 hours before or 2 hours after Tetracycline if required
- Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Haemachromatosis
- Haemosiderosis
- Patients receiving repeated blood transfusion
- Anaemia not produced by iron deficiency
Side Effects
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Temporary staining of teeth
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with caution to patients with iron storage or absorption disease
- Haemoglobinopathies
- Existing gastrointestinal disease
