Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
- Replaces iron found in haemoglobin, myoglobin, and other enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapeutic dose for adults: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily
- Maintenance dose for adults: 1½ teaspoonful daily
- Dosage for children based on age groups
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with Tetracycline
- Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Not for patients with haemachromatosis and haemosiderosis
- Not for patients receiving repeated blood transfusion
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting
- Possible side effects reduced by taking with or immediately after food
- May cause temporary staining of teeth
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with caution for patients with iron storage or absorption disease
- Administer with caution for patients with haemoglobinopathies or gastrointestinal disease
