Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
- Routine administration of iron
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
- Replaces iron found in haemoglobin, myoglobin and other enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Adult initial therapeutic dose: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily in divided doses
- Adult maintenance dose: 1½ teaspoonful daily
- Children dosage as per physician's direction
- Can be mixed with water or fruit juice to avoid tooth staining
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with tetracycline
- Absorption decreased in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in haemachromatosis and haemosiderosis
- Not for patients receiving repeated blood transfusion or with non-iron deficiency anaemia
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
- Potential to cause constipation
- May cause temporary staining of teeth when in liquid form

- Caution required in patients with iron storage or absorption disease, haemoglobinopathies, or existing gastrointestinal disease
