Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits degranulation of mast cells
- Inhibits release of cytokines
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents: 10 mg once a day
- May be taken with or without food
- Specific doses for children based on weight
Interaction
- Increases systemic exposure when administered with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Should be used with caution with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Grapefruit and Grapefruit juice should not be taken simultaneously with Rupatadine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, cough, diarrhea
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless potential benefit outweighs potential risk
- Not recommended during lactation unless potential benefits justify potential risk to infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in elderly
- Not established for patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- The most common adverse reaction is somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and supportive measures should be given in case of accidental ingestion of very high doses
