Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes the platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits degranulation of mast cells
- Inhibits the release of cytokines
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents (over 12 years): 10 mg once daily
- May be taken with or without food
- Doses for children aged 2 to 11 years based on weight
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure when co-administered with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution advised when co-administered with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Should not be taken simultaneously with grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common: asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: appetite increased, diarrhea, nasal dryness, weight increased
- Rare: palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless potential benefit outweighs risk
- Not recommended during lactation unless potential benefit justifies risk
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Caution advised in elderly patients
- Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment required in case of accidental ingestion of very high doses
