Indications

Pharmacology

Fexofenadine is an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor, preventing histamine activation and downstream effects. It has selective affinity for H1 receptors, without CNS effects.

Dosage & Administration

  • Allergic Rhinitis:
    • Adults and children 12 years and older:
      • 60 mg twice daily
      • 120 mg once daily
      • 180 mg once daily
    • Children from 6 to 11 years:
      • 30 mg twice daily
      • 60 mg once daily
    • Children from 2 to 11 years:
      • 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
  • Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria:
    • Adults and children 12 years and older:
      • 60 mg twice daily
      • 120 mg once daily
      • 180 mg once daily
    • Children from 6 to 11 years:
      • 30 mg twice daily
      • 60 mg once daily
    • Children from 6 months to less than 2 years:
      • 15 mg or 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) twice daily

Interaction

  • Does not undergo hepatic biotransformation
  • Interaction with erythromycin or ketoconazole can increase fexofenadine level
  • No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
  • Administering antacids prior to Elfexo reduces bioavailability

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

  • Elderly patient: Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals over 65 years of age
