Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine acts as an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage and administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
- Children from 2 to 11 years: Suspension - 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
Interaction
- No interaction with omeprazole observed
- Administration with antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels causes reduction in bioavailability
- Recommended 2 hours gap between administration with antacids
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side effects
- Nervous system disorders: headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea
- Immune system disorders: hypersensitivity reactions, chest tightness, dyspnoea, flushing, systemic anaphylaxis
Pregnancy and lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
- Not recommended for mothers breastfeeding their babies
Precautions and warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about adverse reactions like tachycardia and palpitations
Use in special populations
- Alteration in pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- No substantial effect on pharmacokinetics in moderate to severe hepatic disease
- Adverse events similar in elderly patients compared to patients under 65 years
Overdose effects
- Reported effects: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No development of clinically significant adverse reactions up to 800 mg single doses
