Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years of age and over
  • Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years of age and older

Pharmacology

  • H1 histamine receptor mediation of hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
  • Mechanism of degranulation of mast cells and basophils leading to release of histamine and inflammatory mediators

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dosage for allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and older
  • Recommended dosage for allergic rhinitis in children from 6 to 11 years
  • Recommended dosage for allergic rhinitis in children from 2 to 11 years
  • Recommended dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older
  • Recommended dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in children from 6 to 11 years
  • Recommended dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in children from 6 months to less than 2 years

Interaction

  • No hepatic biotransformation
  • Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may result in increased level of fexofenadine in plasma
  • No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole observed
  • Administering antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels 15 minutes prior to Xofena may reduce bioavailability

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients

Side Effects

  • Common undesirable effects in adults include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea
  • Uncommon undesirable effects in adults include fatigue
  • Post-marketing surveillance reports hypersensitivity reactions, insomnia, nervousness, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, and pruritus

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate data from the use of Fexofenadine hydrochloride in pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
  • Patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about potential adverse reactions

Use in Special Populations

  • Pharmacokinetics altered in individuals with renal impairment
  • No substantial effect on pharmacokinetics with moderate to severe hepatic disease

Overdose Effects

  • Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
