Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years of age and over
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years of age and older
Pharmacology
- H1 histamine receptor mediation of hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Mechanism of degranulation of mast cells and basophils leading to release of histamine and inflammatory mediators
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for allergic rhinitis in adults and children 12 years and older
- Recommended dosage for allergic rhinitis in children from 6 to 11 years
- Recommended dosage for allergic rhinitis in children from 2 to 11 years
- Recommended dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 12 years and older
- Recommended dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in children from 6 to 11 years
- Recommended dosage for chronic idiopathic urticaria in children from 6 months to less than 2 years
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may result in increased level of fexofenadine in plasma
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole observed
- Administering antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels 15 minutes prior to Xofena may reduce bioavailability
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common undesirable effects in adults include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea
- Uncommon undesirable effects in adults include fatigue
- Post-marketing surveillance reports hypersensitivity reactions, insomnia, nervousness, tachycardia, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, and pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate data from the use of Fexofenadine hydrochloride in pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about potential adverse reactions
Use in Special Populations
- Pharmacokinetics altered in individuals with renal impairment
- No substantial effect on pharmacokinetics with moderate to severe hepatic disease

- Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
