Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
- Improves health-related quality of life in allergic rhinitis patients
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Reduces signs and symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Improves health-related quality of life in chronic idiopathic urticaria patients
Pharmacology
- Responsible for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions
- Inhibits degranulation of mast cells and basophils
- Blocks release of histamine and inflammatory mediators
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg/180 mg once daily
- Dosage for impaired renal function: 60 mg/30 mg once daily
- Children 6-11 years: 30 mg/60 mg once daily
- Children < 2 years: 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
- Dosage for impaired renal function in children: 30 mg or 5 ml once daily
Interaction
- No hepatic biotransformation
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole increases fexofenadine levels
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole
- Antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide reduces bioavailability
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, palpitations, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on use in pregnant women
- No data on effect on fertility
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally/hepatically impaired patients
- Administer with care in special groups
- Warn patients with history of cardiovascular disease
- Unlikely to produce significant effects on ability to drive or use machines
- No significant effects on central nervous system function
Use in Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- Moderate to severe hepatic disease does not substantially affect pharmacokinetics
- Similar adverse events in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No clinically significant adverse reactions up to 800 mg single doses
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment recommended
