Polytetra 3%+0.013% (Ointment)

Indications

• Prophylaxis and local treatment of superficial ocular infections
• Effective against streptococci, rickettsiae, E. coli, and A. aerogenes
• Suitable for conjunctivitis, keratitis, pink eye, corneal ulcer, blepharitis
• Can be used in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses
• Treatment for bacterial complications of distemper in dogs

Pharmacology

• Oxytetracycline inhibits cell growth by inhibiting translation
• Binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit
• Prevents amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome
• Lipophilic and can easily pass through the cell membrane
• Polymyxin B sulfate possesses antifungal activity

Dosage & Administration

• Administer topically to the eye 2-4 times daily

• May cause minor side effects in small doses
• Severe allergic reactions reported in some cases

• Check with the doctor if breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Serious, life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions reported in some cats
• Discontinue treatment and contact veterinarian if severe symptoms appear
• Use may result in an overgrowth of resistant organisms
