Indications
- Relief of flatulence
- Treatment of abdominal distention
- Relief of fullness and windy colic
- Management of excess gas in the digestive tract
- Large bowel preparation
- Anecdotal use in the treatment of poisoning
Pharmacology
- Relieves upper GI bloating
- Dispersion and prevention of mucous surrounded gas pockets
- Acts in the stomach and intestines to change the surface tension of gas bubbles
- Aids in the elimination of gas from the GI tract
- Reduces postoperative gas pains
- Enhances visualization prior to gastroscopy
Dosage & Administration
- To be taken after meals and at bedtime
- Can be given with infant's feeds
- Children less than 2 years of age: 20 mg (0.3 ml) 4 times daily up to 240 mg/day (3.6 ml)
- Children 2-12 years of age: 40 mg (0.6 ml) 4 times daily
- Adults: 40-125 mg (0.6 ml-1.9 ml) 4 times daily, up to 500 mg/day (7.5 ml) or 1-3 chewable tablets 4 times daily, up to 500 mg/day (12 tablets)
Interaction
- No evidence of modification of other drugs
- Reduced defoaming effect by antacids such as Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Carbonate
Side Effects
- Physiologically inert
- No adverse effects noted after oral ingestion
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No harmful effects suggested for pregnant women
- Excretion in breastmilk not established
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not exceed 12 doses per day except under physician's advice and supervision
