Indications
- Inflammatory conditions for eyes, ears, and nose where bacterial infection is likely or present
Pharmacology
- Betamethasone: Corticosteroid effective in inflammatory dermatoses and psoriasis
- Neomycin sulfate: Bactericidal against many bacteria, broad-spectrum antibiotic
Dosage & Administration
- Eye Drops: 1 drop every 1-2 hours until control achieved
- Ear Drops: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours until control achieved
- Nose Drops: 2-3 drops into each nostril 2-3 times daily
- Eye Ointment: Applied thinly to the conjunctival sac at night or 3-4 times daily
Contraindications
- Avoid in viral, fungal, tuberculous, or purulent conditions
- Contra-indicated in glaucoma or herpetic keratitis
Side Effects
- Rare acute sensitization to neomycin
- Rise in intraocular pressure for corticosteroid users
- Corneal thinning leading to perforation reported
- Cataract risk after prolonged corticosteroid use

- Avoid extensive topical steroid use during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not administer steroids to 'red eyes' without definitive diagnosis
- Regular review for raised intraocular pressure or infections
- Avoid unnecessary neomycin use to minimize resistance
