Methasol-N 0.1%+0.5% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Eye: Inflammatory conditions
• Ear: Otitis externa
• Nose: Inflammatory conditions

Pharmacology

• Corticosteroid effectiveness in inflammatory dermatoses
• Effectiveness in less responsive conditions such as psoriasis
• Enhanced anti-inflammatory action by 16β-methyl group
• Reduction of sodium and water retaining properties
• Bactericidal action against bacteria associated with skin infections
• Broad spectrum antibiotic activity
• Inhibition of protein synthesis in bacteria

Dosage & Administration

• Eye drops: 1 drop instilled every one or two hours
• Ear drops: 2 or 3 drops instilled every two or three hours
• Nose drops: 2 or 3 drops instilled two or three times daily
• Eye ointment: Thin and even application to the conjunctival sac

Contraindications

• Viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent conditions
• Contra-indicated in the presence of glaucoma
• Contra-indicated in herpetic keratitis
• Risk of ototoxicity in perforated ear drum

Side Effects

• Acute sensitization to neomycin
• Rise in intra-ocular pressure with corticosteroid use
• Thinning of the cornea
• Cataract after prolonged treatment

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not classified by FDA
• Potential abnormalities in fetal development
• Refrain from extensive use in pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid administration until definitive diagnosis
• Regular review to exclude raised intra-ocular pressure
• Minimize occurrence of neomycin-resistant organisms
