Indications
- Inflammatory conditions (eg. uveitis, marginal keratitis, allergic conjunctivitis)
- Otitis externa
- Other inflammatory conditions where infection is present or suspected
Pharmacology
- Corticosteroid effective in inflammatory dermatoses
- Effective in psoriasis
- Bactericidal against many bacteria
- Broad spectrum antibiotic
- Inhibits protein synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Eye Drops: 1 drop instilled every one or two hours
- Ear Drops: 2-3 drops instilled every two or three hours
- Nose Drops: 2-3 drops instilled two or three times daily
- Eye Ointment: Applied thinly and evenly to the conjunctival sac
Contraindications
- Viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent conditions
- Contra-indicated in glaucoma or herpetic keratitis
- Not to be used if ear drum is perforated
Side Effects
- Acute sensitization to neomycin
- Rise in intra-ocular pressure
- Thinning of the cornea
- Cataract
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category-Not Classified
- Topical administration to pregnant animals can cause fetal abnormalities
- Topical steroids not to be used extensively in pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Steroids should not be administered to "red eyes" until definitive diagnosis
- Avoid unnecessary topical use of neomycin products
