Indications
- Chronic suppurative otitis media treatment
- Otitis externa treatment
- Prophylactic treatment of otitis externa following trauma
- Post-operative local use in surgery to infected mastoid cavities
- Redness, itching, and swelling of the skin treatment
Pharmacology
- Gentamicin binds to 30s and 50s ribosomal subunits of susceptible bacteria disrupting protein synthesis
- Hydrocortisone used for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects
Dosage
- 2-4 drops in the affected ear three to four times a day for middle ear infection
- 2-4 drops in the affected ear three to four times a day for ear canal infection
- Apply to the affected area of the skin two or three times per day for redness, itching, and swelling of the skin
Administration
Ear Drops need to shake well immediately before use
Interaction
- Gentamicin additive effect with other neurotoxic and/or nephrotoxic drugs
- Hydrocortisone interaction with thiazides, NSAIDs, anticoagulants, antidiabetics, antihypertensives, ethanol, carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone, barbiturates, rifampicin, ciclosporin, oestrogens, oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to aminoglycoside
- Pregnancy
- Hepatic impairment

- Concurrent use of neuromuscular blocking agents
- Myasthenia gravis

- Conditions predisposing to ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity
