Indications
- Topical treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris
- Particularly inflammatory lesions
- Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and above
Pharmacology
- Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to 23S RNA
- Benzoyl peroxide cleaves to form benzoyloxy radicals, interacts with bacterial proteins
- Increases turnover rate of epithelial cells
Dosage & Administration
- Applied once daily in the evening to the entire affected area
- Excessive application will not improve efficacy
- Effect may be seen as early as week 2-5 of treatment
- Not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age
Interaction
- May enhance the action of neuromuscular blocking agents
- May antagonize the effects of parasympathomimetics
- May competitively inhibit the effects of macrolides, ketolides, streptogramins, linezolid, and chloramphenicol
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, benzoyl peroxide, or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Allergic reactions including hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis
- Paraesthesia
- Colitis including pseudomembranous colitis
- Erythema, peeling, dryness, burning sensation, dermatitis, pruritus, erythematous rash, urticaria
- Application site reactions including skin discoloration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on the use of clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide alone in pregnant women
- Use during lactation only if expected benefit justifies potential risk to the infant
- No data on the effect on fertility in humans
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid contact with mouth, eyes, lips, other mucous membranes, or areas of irritated or broken skin
- Use with caution in patients with a history of regional enteritis or ulcerative colitis
- Avoid concomitant topical acne therapy that may cause severe local irritancy
- Avoid prolonged exposure to sun and use sunscreen product
- Discontinue if prolonged or significant diarrhea occurs
- May cause increased sensitivity to sunlight
- Resistance and cross-resistance with other antibiotics may occur
Overdose Effects
- Excessive application may result in severe irritation
- Excessive application of clindamycin may result in absorption of sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects
- Ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal adverse reactions

Storage Conditions
- Store in a refrigerator (2°-8°C), do not freeze
- Do not store above 25°C after dispensing
