Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
- Routine administration of iron
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport
- Replaces iron found in haemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapeutic dose: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily in divided doses
- Maintenance dose: 1½ teaspoonful daily
- Dosage for different age groups
- Mixing with water or fruit juice
- Avoiding mixing with milk
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken with Tetracycline
- Instruction for concurrent use with Tetracycline
- Decreased absorption with antacids and tea
Contraindications
- Not for haemachromatosis and haemosiderosis patients
- Should not be given to patients receiving repeated blood transfusion
- Not for anaemia not produced by iron deficiency
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting
- Side effects reduced by taking with or immediately after food
- May cause constipation
- Temporary staining of teeth with liquid medication
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution for patients with iron storage or iron absorption disease
- Administered with caution for patients with haemoglobinopathies or gastrointestinal disease
